CBC Highlights 2016 – Jake Arrieta

The first no-hitter of the 2016 season belongs to the Chicago Cubs’ Jake Arrieta. He blanked the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati Thursday night 16-0. This was Arrieta’s second no-hitter of his career, making him only the 28th player to accomplish that feat since 1913. Only five pitchers in the history of baseball have more than three no-hitters; Nolan Ryan (7), Sandy Koufax (4), Larry Corcoran (3), Cy Young (3) and Bob Feller (3). I wouldn’t doubt him joining this list of pitchers this season the way he is pitching!

eBay Find – 1990 K-Mart Baseball Superstars

1990_topp_kmart_superstarsI don’t remember buying this set as a 16-year old teenager, although I might have. I do remember having quite a few of these cards from the set in my personal collections back in the day. Players like Will Clark (who I still collect to this day), Ryne Sandberg, Tony Gwynn, Kevin Mitchell, Craig Biggio, Doc Gooden, Don Mattingly, Wade Boggs, Cal Ripken, Kirby Puckett, Bret Saberhagen, Fred McGriff, and Mark McGwire were in my personal collections. The K-Mart Baseball Superstars 33-card set was produced by Topps and distributed at K-Mart stores. The cards have a super glossy finish with white borders on the front. The backs are unfinished with a red border and the usual biographical information and stats you find on most cards. The set features 11 cards of players/manager that are in the Hall of Fame, Ryne Sandberg, Ozzie Smith, Tony Gwynn, Craig Biggio, Wade Boggs, Cal Ripken, Kirby Puckett, Rickey Henderson, Nolan Ryan, and Dennis Eckersley.

2016 Custom Baseball Card Set – Pack #6

Time for another pack of 2016 Custom Baseball Cards. This group has a combined 18 All-Star appearances, one sure-fire Hall of Famer (Cabrera) and two that I believe have a shot at the Hall of Fame (Sale and Street) if they can continue their success.

Now onto the cards –

14_miguel_cabrera_front 14_miguel_cabrera_back

Miguel Cabrera, 1B, Detroit Lions (#14)
Miguel Cabrera is off to a slow start in 2016, with only one home run and six runs batted in his first 12 games and a batting average of .255 which is about 70 points lower than his career average. He is a 10x All-Star, World Series Champion, 2x MVP, American League Triple Crown Winner, 6x Silver Slugger, 4x American League Batting Champion, 2x American League Home Run Champion who will be in Cooperstown someday.

185_jay_bruce_front 185_jay_bruce_back

Jay Bruce, OF, Cincinnati Reds (#185)
The rumors of Jay Bruce’s demise might be a little exaggerated and premature. He is currently batting .278 with three home runs and 13 runs batted in. He also has two doubles and one triple on the young season.

267_chris_colabello_front 267_chris_colabello_back

Chris Colabello, OF, Toronto Blue Jays (#267)

20_chris_sale_front 20_chris_sale_back

Chris Sale, SP, Chicago White Sox (#20)
Chris Sale has started off 2016 where he left off in 2015. He is currently 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA and 23 strikeouts. He has been an All-Star the last four years and is looking to make it a 5th in 2016.

133_huston_street_front 133_huston_street_back

Huston Street, RP, Los Angeles Angels (#133)
The former American League Rookie of the Year (2005) joined the 300 Save Club last season. One of only four active relief pitchers in baseball who are part of the club. He has three saves and six appearances this season as the closer for the Los Angeles Angels.

I hope you enjoyed the cards and keep an eye out for the next pack.

CBC Highlights 2016 – AL/NL Player of the Week (04/11-04/17)

Major League Baseball must have known I didn’t have much on my plate tonight. They decided to award Co-American League and Co-National League Player of the Week awards this week, which means twice as much work creating the custom cards. Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros and Mark Trumbo of the Baltimore Orioles were selected in the American League with Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals selected in the National League. This is Trumbo’s and Harper’s second appearance in the CBC Highlights 2016 set and the second week in a row that a Houston Astros and a Colorado Rockies player was honored.

eBay Find – 1985 Donruss Highlights

After coming up with my design for my Custom Baseball Cards Highlights 2016 set using the Donruss Highlights from 1985-1987 as my inspiration I realized I needed to add the sets back to my baseball card collection. So off to eBay I went and after finding an auction with all three sets, I made my bid and waited. I was able to win the auction for fairly cheap and the sets arrived a few days ago.

set_front  set_back

The 1985 Donruss Highlights was the company’s first attempt at a post season set. The 56-card box set was released in November of 1985 and consisted of 56 cards highlighting the players and pitchers of the month during the season as well as other notable achievements. The set was very popular and sold out before the first boxes shipped and was selling above retail from the moment it arrived in hobby stores and shows. The card design of the 1985 Donruss Highlights set was very similar to the 1985 Donruss base set with the exceptions of the stripes (gold for highlights and red for base set) running along the bottom and the team logo replaced with the Highlights logo. You can see two examples below.

andre_dawson_1  george_brett_1

You can check out the set checklist HERE.

The set contains quite a few Hall of Famers, including Tom Seaver (x2), Rollie Fingers, Tony Perez, George Brett (x2), Rickey Henderson (x2), Gary Carter (x2), Nolan Ryan, Rod Carew, Eddie Murray, Andre Dawson, Wade Boggs, Phil Niekro, Dave Winfield, Lou Gehrig (Puzzle).

The cards are still wrapped in their original plastic and I am debating whether I should remove them or not? It would be the first time they have felt fresh air in over 30 years! Stay tuned for the 1986 and 1987 Donruss Highlights set recap.
